From Jean Baudrillard, The System of Objects.

I often experience this when traveling abroad: the insecurity of not being able to understand the advertising and facing my inability to know what I want autonomously.

But it reminds me also about how not being targeted by advertising becomes, within a consumer society, a means of instigating insecurity and control — a way of suppressing and nullifying the consumer demands of one group, discouraging them from believing they have the right to want or enjoy anything, in favor of the demands and desires of more dominant groups. Social exclusion then manifests in people even in isolation, when they can’t generate any desire to motivate themselves but don’t know who to blame but themselves.
